Only John's shadow is insubstantial, not his metaphorical heart or spirit. That fading away arm is telling. I also liked the parallel between their jaunty, "bright lights, big city" gear and the illuminated "everyday" city vs. their shadows, which really 'come alive' (Rodney's, too, in terms of recognizing his feelings) in the dimmer, mysterious glow of the Other Side.

GAH! I posted to the wrong person! I meant the story, not the picture! Sorry! I was waiting to digest your picture before I commentted. (IT FREAKS ME OUT) I didn't want to say that out loud. One of my biggest fears has been shadows NOTmatching the objects casting them. So, back-peddling, I LOVE the creepiness in the picture, which made mes cringe, and tell myself not to sleep with the lights on low (casts more shadows) and HATE how the two of you have made my childhood nightmares come true. GAH! I hope you're happy!

Ha! Crossed wires. :) Is the shadows thing because of a scary movie you watched as a kid? That reminds me of my sister, who hates crossing runners or rugs in the dark because of the ghost in the Frighteners bulging up under them. Childhood nightmares are the worst. :) And thanks for looking, despite it all! ;)

Thanks for commenting! I had to play around with the shadows for an embarrassingly long time before I was satisfied. And I really love what my author did with it and how different details in the picture were transformed in the story. :)

Nah, I just have an overactive imagination. Between shadows changing shapes for no reason (when you're under 5), and Wendy having to sew Peter Pan's to him, they terrified me as a kid. Ghosts and monsters were bad enough, but I ACTUALLY had a shadow, so...

This is great! I love the colors and the 80s typefaces, and how they both look kind of gawky in their young, skinny bodies. Their kissing shadows are very sweet.
